Quarantine: the cheapest insurance in fishkeeping

A separate observation system protects every animal you already own. It costs a fraction of an established display tank and it is the single practice most likely to prevent a whole-tank disaster.

What quarantine is for

New fish, invertebrates, plants, live rock, and even water from another system can carry pathogens and parasites that are not visible at the point of sale. Many aquatic parasites have life stages that are microscopic or that spend part of the cycle off the host entirely, so an animal can look completely healthy and still introduce an infection.

Transport and rehousing are also stressful. Stress suppresses immune function, so a low-level infection that was invisible in the retailer's system can become clinical days later. Quarantine gives that timeline somewhere to happen that is not your display tank.

The second purpose is observation. A new animal in a bare, uncrowded system is easy to watch. You can confirm it is eating, breathing normally, and behaving as expected before it disappears into rockwork among established residents.

Start before you buy

Evaluate the source. Look at the whole system the animal came from, not just the individual: dead or distressed animals in connected tanks, visibly poor water, or animals scratching against surfaces are all information. Ask how long the animal has been in stock and whether it is eating.

Inspect the individual for respiration rate, swimming and balance, body condition, skin and fin condition, clear eyes, and interest in food. Do not buy an animal you have not seen eat if the retailer can feed on request. Confirm the identification and adult requirements before purchase, not after.

Set up the quarantine system

  • Separate everything. Dedicated nets, siphons, buckets, and towels. Shared wet equipment moves pathogens between systems just as effectively as moving the animals would.
  • Bring biological capacity with you. A sponge filter that has been running in an established system provides working biofiltration immediately. Keeping a spare seeded sponge permanently is far easier than cycling a tank in an emergency.
  • Keep it simple and observable. Bare bottom or minimal substrate, with shelter appropriate to the species so the animal is not permanently exposed. Simple surfaces are easy to clean and easy to inspect.
  • Match the environment. Stable temperature, appropriate salinity where relevant, gentle circulation, secure lid for species that jump, and subdued lighting for animals that are stressed by exposure.
  • Test it like a real aquarium. A small, lightly filtered system with a stressed new arrival can develop ammonia quickly. Test more often here than in your display tank, not less.

Acclimate deliberately

Match temperature first, then chemistry. The relevant differences may include temperature, salinity, pH, and hardness, and the size of those differences determines how gradual the transition needs to be — there is no universal timer that fits every animal and every pair of systems.

Do not add retailer transport water to your system. Transfer the animal itself and discard the bag water; that water can carry the very organisms you are trying to exclude, and its chemistry may have degraded during transport. Handle animals gently and minimise time out of water.

Keep the room and the system dark and quiet for the first period after introduction, and offer food once the animal has settled rather than immediately on arrival.

Observe on a defined plan

Check daily: respiration rate and effort, gill colour and movement, swimming and balance, appetite and whether the animal actually swallows food, body condition, colour, skin, fins, eyes, faeces, and any scratching or flashing against surfaces. Record what you see with dates so you can distinguish a trend from a one-off.

Duration is a judgment call, not a fixed number. It depends on the species, the source, what you are watching for, the life cycle of the organisms of concern, and whether anything appeared during observation. The period should be long enough that a problem which was incubating on arrival has had time to become visible — and it restarts if you add another new animal to the same quarantine system.

Do not medicate by default. Prophylactic treatment of a healthy animal exposes it to unnecessary risk, can harm the biofilter, and can select for resistance. Treatments including copper and hydrogen peroxide have narrow margins, are lethal to many invertebrates, and interact with water chemistry. Treat a diagnosed problem under qualified aquatic-veterinary direction, following the current product label for the actual water volume.

Moving into the display tank

Introduce when the animal is eating reliably, behaving normally, and showing no signs that need explanation. Plan the introduction itself: consider adding at a quieter time, rearranging territory where that is appropriate for the species, and having a separation plan ready. Then keep watching — the first days in a stocked tank are their own stress event.

If quarantine is genuinely impossible — for example with an animal that cannot be held separately — reduce the risk another way: buy from a source you can evaluate, add one animal at a time, keep the display tank's conditions stable, and increase observation and testing after each addition.
