Internal Parasites
Investigate wasting or unusual feces without assuming an intestinal parasite.
When to act urgently
Breathing distress, rapid deterioration, inability to remain upright, major wounds or multiple deaths require urgent aquatic-veterinary or fish-health help. Check aeration and water immediately; do not wait to match a photograph.
What you may notice
- Weight loss, appetite changes or abnormal feces may be noticed. White or stringy feces alone do not identify parasites.
Possible causes and look-alikes
- Insufficient food intake, competition and other chronic illness can resemble intestinal parasitism. Flagellates and worms are different organisms.
Check first
- Record species, aquarium type, recent arrivals or changes, appetite, breathing, and how many fish are affected. Check aggression, injuries, filtration and aeration.
- Test ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature; measure dissolved oxygen where possible and salinity in marine/brackish systems. Correct verified environmental problems using suitably prepared water, avoiding abrupt chemistry changes.
- Observe whether this fish actually reaches and eats an appropriate diet; review new-stock and sanitation history.
Treatment and correction context
- Persistent wasting needs examination and appropriate microscopic testing. Identifying the organism matters before choosing a treatment.
- Medication route depends on the diagnosis, formulation and whether the animal eats; an oral route is not universally superior. Do not use a shared medicated-food recipe for every cause.
Record for your next step
Write down onset and progression, species, affected/total fish, recent introductions, feeding observations, dated water results with kit units, and every action or product already used. Contact the diagnostic service before collecting or shipping samples.
