Your tank's real water volume is not the number on the box

Every dose, every water change percentage and every stocking judgement is measured against the water actually in the aquarium. That is rarely the number printed on the label.

Why the labelled size is the wrong number

A "twenty gallon" aquarium is a product name describing the glass, not a measurement of the water inside it. The gap comes from several places at once. The tank is never filled to the brim: there is freeboard between the water line and the rim. The glass itself occupies part of the external dimensions. Manufacturing tolerances move the figure a little in either direction. And once the aquarium is set up, substrate, rock, wood, equipment and decor all take up space that water would otherwise fill.

Those subtractions add up. A tank with a deep substrate bed and a substantial rock structure can hold noticeably less water than its name suggests. Working from the label means every product dose, every calculated water change and every comparison against a recorded stocking minimum is based on a volume the aquarium does not contain.

This matters most where the consequences are chemical. A treatment dosed to a volume larger than the real one is an overdose relative to the water it is actually entering. That is why the safest habit is to measure once, write the number down, and revise it whenever the hardscape changes substantially.

Measure the water, not the furniture

Measure the inside dimensions of the aquarium, not the outside, and measure to the water line rather than to the rim. For a rectangular tank, multiply length by width by water depth to get a volume in cubic units, then convert: one US gallon is 231 cubic inches, and one litre is 1,000 cubic centimetres. Other shapes need their own formula rather than a rectangular estimate. A cylinder is the area of its circular base multiplied by water depth. A bow-front sits between a rectangle and a cylinder segment, so a plain rectangular calculation overstates it. Hexagonal and corner tanks each have their own geometry. Treat any irregular or custom shape as unknown until it has been measured a different way.

The most reliable method for an odd shape does not involve geometry at all: fill the aquarium using a container of known volume and count. It is slow, it is only practical before livestock are present, and it is the only approach that captures every quirk of the actual tank.

Subtract what the water cannot occupy

Substrate is usually the largest single subtraction. Its contribution depends on depth and footprint, and it is worth estimating rather than ignoring: a bed spread across the whole floor of the tank at a meaningful depth displaces a real share of the volume. Rock displaces roughly its own solid volume, which for porous marine rock is less than its outside dimensions suggest. Wood, large decor and internal equipment each take their share.

There is a practical way to capture all of this at once. Fill the finished, aquascaped aquarium to its working water line using a container of known volume, counting as you go. What you counted is the real operating volume, with every displacement already accounted for. Record it somewhere you will find it again, because this is the number every later decision should use.

Sumps, refugiums and external filters add water that is easy to forget. If the system circulates through connected vessels, the total system volume includes them, and that total is what a whole-system treatment enters. Note both numbers: the display volume and the system volume.

Where the number gets used

Product labels state a ratio: an amount per a stated volume of water. Scaling that ratio to your aquarium requires knowing the aquarium's volume, and the label dosing guide covers how to do that arithmetic without rounding away the safety margin.

A water change described as a percentage is also a volume calculation. The same percentage of two different real volumes is two different amounts of prepared water, which is why replacement water should be mixed against the measured figure rather than the label size. Recorded species minimums are stated in volume too. Comparing a species record against a tank's labelled size rather than its real water volume quietly overstates the space available. That does not make a minimum a guarantee — footprint, swimming length, social grouping, filtration and maturity all matter alongside volume — but it does mean the comparison should at least use a real number.

Re-measure when the aquarium changes

Adding a substantial rock structure, changing substrate depth, or adding a sump changes the volume the aquarium holds. So does a switch from one hardscape layout to a much heavier one. None of these announce themselves, so the habit worth keeping is simple: whenever the inside of the tank changes materially, revisit the number and update the record.

Evaporation does not change the volume, it lowers the water line temporarily. Topping off restores it. That distinction matters for salinity and hardness, which the source water guide explains in detail.

Record and revisit

Write the working volume down, note the system volume separately, and re-measure whenever the hardscape or plumbing changes.

The boundary: a calculated volume is an estimate of the water in your system, not a guarantee of safety for any product or species. Always follow the current label for the exact product, and verify species requirements against current primary sources.
