Algae Bloom
Identify the type of growth and assess light, nutrients, waste and oxygen.
When to act urgently
Breathing distress, loss of balance, rapid decline or deaths need urgent attention while you check aeration and environmental conditions. Clear water does not establish safety.
What you may notice
- Green water, surface films or attached growth are different observations. Dense blooms or decaying growth may accompany breathing problems.
Possible causes and look-alikes
- Light, nutrient inputs, waste and circulation can contribute. Low measured nutrients do not prove that nutrients are irrelevant.
Check first
- Record species, system age, recent changes, temperature, pH, alkalinity and nitrogen readings. Compare source water; check chlorine/chloramine, oxygen and salinity where relevant.
- Record the growth location and lighting, feeding and maintenance changes. Check aeration and water; monitor oxygen if the bloom is dense or collapsing.
Treatment and correction context
- Remove excess growth and decay, maintain circulation, and tailor lighting to the actual plants or corals. Avoid a blanket photoperiod, blackout or algaecide recommendation.
- Dense blooms and die-off can lower oxygen. Distress or bloom collapse needs urgent assessment; aquarium growth is not automatically a harmful cyanobacterial bloom.
Record for your next step
Record tank and source-water results with units and kit method, the animals affected, equipment status, recent feeding/stocking/maintenance, and each correction with its time and follow-up reading.
