High Nitrates
Check the measurement, source water and maintenance trend against species-specific needs.
When to act urgently
Breathing distress, loss of balance, rapid decline or deaths need urgent attention while you check aeration and environmental conditions. Clear water does not establish safety.
What you may notice
- Often there is no distinctive visible sign; a test result starts the investigation.
Possible causes and look-alikes
- Waste accumulation and nitrate in source water can contribute. An isolated reading cannot establish one disease cause.
Check first
- Record species, system age, recent changes, temperature, pH, alkalinity and nitrogen readings. Compare source water; check chlorine/chloramine, oxygen and salinity where relevant.
- Follow the exact kit mixing and timing instructions. Record whether results are NO3 or NO3-N; compare tank and source water using the same method.
Treatment and correction context
- Review feeding, stocking, debris and measured maintenance trends; choose changes suitable for the animals and prepared source water rather than a universal threshold.
- Very low pH/alkalinity alongside ammonia may indicate an old-tank problem. Avoid abrupt chemistry correction; nitrate alone does not establish the cause of head erosion.
Record for your next step
Record tank and source-water results with units and kit method, the animals affected, equipment status, recent feeding/stocking/maintenance, and each correction with its time and follow-up reading.
