Feeding aquarium fish without guesswork
Feeding is where husbandry and water quality meet. What you feed, how much reaches the animal, and what is left behind all change the system.

Nutritional needs are species-specific
Fish require protein and amino acids, energy from lipids and carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals — but the proportions differ substantially between species and change with life stage. Carnivores, omnivores, herbivores, and detritivores have different digestive anatomy and different capacities to use plant material or carbohydrate. A diet that suits one group can leave another underfed or overloaded.
Life stage matters as much as species. Growing juveniles, breeding adults, and mature animals at maintenance have different requirements, and demand also shifts with water temperature because metabolic rate does. Start from the actual species and its stage, not from a generic "tropical" product category.
Fishician does not prescribe a universal portion or schedule. The right amount depends on the species, life stage, health, food type, water temperature, competition at feeding time, and the individual's condition.
Read the food label properly
- Check the intended species or feeding group and the intended life stage. A product for one is not automatically appropriate for another.
- Check particle size and whether the food sinks, floats, or stays suspended — a bottom-dwelling animal cannot compete for floating flake, and a surface feeder will not search substrate.
- Read the guaranteed analysis and the ingredient list, and remember that ingredient quality affects digestibility and how much of the nutrient content the animal can actually use.
- Check the date and storage instructions. Fats oxidise and vitamins degrade; old, warm, or repeatedly opened food loses nutritional value even when it looks unchanged.
- Buy quantities you will use while the food is still fresh, and store as directed rather than in a warm, humid spot beside the tank.
Variety with a purpose
A well-formulated staple appropriate to the species does the work. Variety is useful where it broadens nutrient intake, supports natural feeding behaviour, or reaches animals a single food does not — for example a sinking food for bottom dwellers alongside a floating food for surface feeders. Variety for its own sake, or a rotation of treats displacing the staple, is not an improvement.
Live and frozen foods can be valuable but carry their own considerations: sourcing, handling, thawing, and the possibility of introducing organisms with live cultures. Vegetable matter suits grazing species. Match the food to how the animal is built to eat.
Overfeeding is a water-quality failure
Food that is not eaten decomposes in the aquarium and adds nitrogenous waste, exactly like the waste the animals produce. Food that is eaten also increases waste output. Feeding beyond what the system can process is one of the most common routes to elevated ammonia, nitrite accumulation, nutrient build-up, and algae problems.
Judge portions from evidence rather than a rule of thumb: watch the animals actually eat, remove food that persists uneaten, and check body condition over time. Fish that are consistently gaining a distended profile, or losing condition behind the head, are telling you the routine needs adjusting. Test results between water changes will tell you whether the system is keeping up with the load.
Special situations
New arrivals may refuse food while they settle; that is common, but persistent refusal is a sign worth investigating rather than solving by adding more food. During illness, injury, or a water-quality event, feeding practice may need to change — but withholding food is a husbandry decision with real consequences and should follow qualified direction rather than a general internet rule. Growing fry, breeding adults, and animals kept at the edges of their temperature range all have altered requirements.
Automatic feeders and holiday blocks each have failure modes: feeders can jam or dump, and slow-release blocks can affect water chemistry. If you use them, test them before you rely on them.
Keep a record
Log what you feed, how often, what is refused, what persists uneaten, and how body condition and water parameters trend. That record turns feeding from a habit into something you can actually adjust — and it is the context that makes a later problem interpretable.
