How to read a fish food label
Aquarium food is chosen from a front-of-pack claim more often than from the label. The label is where the useful information is, and where the questions it cannot answer become obvious.

Start with the species, not the tub
Nutrient requirements differ by species, life stage, size, water temperature and health. A herbivorous grazer, a carnivore that hunts live prey and an omnivore that picks at everything do not eat the same food, and a growing juvenile does not eat like a mature adult. No single tub is correct for every animal in a mixed aquarium, which is why a stocking list usually implies more than one food.
Before comparing products, write down what each species is documented to eat and how it feeds: at the surface, in mid-water, or off the bottom. A food a fish cannot reach is not a food it eats, and a sinking pellet in a surface-feeder's tank becomes waste. The ingredient list is ordered by weight
Ingredients appear in descending order of inclusion, which makes the first few the most informative part of the label. Named ingredients tell you more than category terms: a specific fish meal or whole organism is more informative than an unnamed blend. For a carnivorous species, a first ingredient that is a grain or a general filler deserves a closer look.
Ingredient quality also affects digestibility and palatability, not just nutrient content on paper. Two foods with similar headline numbers can behave differently in the aquarium because the animals digest them differently, and what is not digested becomes waste the filtration has to handle.
The guaranteed analysis is a range, not a recipe
The guaranteed analysis states minimum or maximum percentages for crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, moisture and sometimes ash. "Crude" refers to the laboratory method, not the quality of the source, and the figures are guarantees at the edges rather than exact values. They tell you the broad category a food belongs to; they do not tell you whether a particular species will thrive on it.
Comparing across formats needs care. A frozen or gel food carries far more water than a dry pellet, so its percentages are not directly comparable to a flake's. Comparing like with like, or converting to a dry-matter basis, is the only way those numbers mean anything against each other.
Size, form and how the food behaves in water
Particle size decides who can eat it. Food too large for a small mouth goes uneaten; food too fine for a large fish drifts into the filter. Many manufacturers state a pellet size or a target fish size, and that figure is often more practically useful than the protein percentage.
Form decides where the food goes. Floating, slow-sinking and fast-sinking foods reach different parts of the aquarium, and matching that to feeding behaviour is how bottom dwellers actually get fed in a tank with fast surface feeders. Whether a food clouds the water or holds together also affects how much uneaten material you will be removing later.
Feeding directions, storage and dates
Feeding directions on a label are generic by necessity: they cannot know your stocking, temperature, life stages or the other foods in rotation. Use them as a starting reference and adjust only from direct observation of feeding access, body condition and water quality. Storage matters more than most keepers expect. Nutrients degrade with heat, light, moisture and time, so an old tub stored above a lit aquarium is not the food the label describes. Check the manufacture or expiry date, buy a size you will finish in a reasonable period, keep it sealed and cool, and keep wet fingers and wet scoops out of dry food.
For medicated or supplemented foods, the label is a set of instructions rather than a suggestion: follow the stated amounts and duration for the exact product, and treat health problems as a reason to check water quality and seek qualified aquatic-veterinary advice rather than to improvise a diet.
Read first
The first few ingredients, the stated particle size, whether the food floats or sinks, and the manufacture or expiry date.
Compare carefully
Only compare guaranteed analysis figures between similar formats; frozen and gel foods carry much more water than dry ones.
Adjust from observation
Feeding access, body condition, uneaten food and water test results. Not from a number printed on a tub.
