Reading aquarium equipment specifications without being misled

Most aquarium equipment is sold on two or three numbers. Some of them are measured under conditions your aquarium will never reproduce, and one of them is usually a marketing claim wearing a measurement's clothes.

"Rated for up to N gallons" is the weakest number on the box

A tank-size rating is not a measurement of anything in your aquarium. It reflects an assumed stocking level, an assumed feeding rate and an assumed maintenance routine, none of which are stated. Two aquariums of identical volume can place completely different loads on the same filter depending on how many animals live there, how much they are fed, how warm the water is and how much organic material accumulates.

Treat the rating as a rough bracket, then look for the numbers that were actually measured, and judge the equipment against your own stocking plan and habits rather than the assumed ones.

Flow ratings are measured without your plumbing

A pump or filter's flow figure is typically measured at zero head height with no media, no hose and no fittings. Real installations add all three. Lift the output above the water line, run it through tubing and elbows, then fill the filter with the media that does the actual work, and delivered flow falls below the printed figure.

Flow also is not filtration. Moving water quickly through a canister does not create biological capacity; that lives on media surface area with adequate oxygen and contact time. A high flow rate through insufficient media simply moves water faster past too little biology, and in a planted or shy-species tank it can create conditions the animals dislike. What matters alongside the number: whether the media baskets can be serviced without dismantling the system, whether replacement media and impellers are available, and whether the flow can be directed to renew the water surface, which is what actually drives gas exchange as the aeration guide explains.

Heater wattage is about the room, not just the tank

Wattage determines how quickly a heater can add heat, and the requirement depends on the gap between room temperature and target temperature, not on volume alone. The same aquarium in a heated living room and in a cold garage needs different heating capacity to hold the same temperature.

A heater's stated accuracy is also worth reading. Many thermostats hold a band rather than a precise value, and a heater's own display is not a measurement of the aquarium. Verify against an independent thermometer, and check it periodically, because a failed thermometer reports comfort while the system drifts. Lighting output is three numbers, not one

Wattage describes power consumption, not usable light, and LED wattage cannot be compared with older technologies on that basis. What matters for photosynthetic organisms is the light energy actually reaching them at depth, which falls off with distance and is attenuated by the water. A fixture's published output means little without the depth it was measured at.

Spectrum matters separately, and manufacturer names for spectrum are not standardized, so the published spectral data is the claim and the name on the box is decoration. Duration is the third number and is set by you. Read the instructions as specifications

Installation requirements are specifications too, and they are where incompatibility usually shows up: minimum and maximum water depth for a heater, required clearance and ventilation for a light, hose diameter, rim thickness limits for clip-on equipment, and whether a device is rated for saltwater use at all.

Electrical requirements deserve the same care. Confirm cords can form drip loops, connections sit above the water line, and equipment is rated for the humidity it will live in. Numbers that are measured

Wattage, dimensions, hose sizes, spectral data and depth-referenced light output. Treat these as real, and check the conditions.

Water-depth limits, clearance and ventilation, rim thickness, saltwater suitability, and electrical requirements.
