Aquarium lighting: intensity, spectrum, and day length are three separate decisions

Light is the one aquarium input that serves the viewer, the plants, and the algae at the same time. Separating what each of those needs is what makes a lighting decision explainable instead of a guess.

Decide who the light is for

Fish do not need light to survive in the way plants and photosynthetic invertebrates do. They need a predictable cycle of light and darkness, enough visibility to find food, and shaded structure to retreat into. A fish-only aquarium can be lit primarily for the person looking at it, which usually means the lowest intensity that renders the animals clearly.

Plants and photosynthetic invertebrates are a different problem. For them light is an energy input that drives photosynthesis, and photosynthesis consumes carbon dioxide and nutrients while releasing oxygen. That process only balances if carbon and nutrients are available in proportion to the light you supply. Adding light without addressing the rest of that equation does not reliably produce more plant growth; it frequently produces more algae, which has no such dependency on your intentions.

Write down which of these the aquarium actually is before shopping. A viewing decision, a plant decision, and a coral decision lead to different fixtures, and a fixture chosen for one of them is frequently wrong for another.

Intensity, spectrum, and duration are not interchangeable

Intensity is how much light energy reaches a given point. It falls off with distance and is attenuated by the water itself, by suspended particulate, and by anything floating on the surface. The same fixture over a shallow aquarium and a deep one delivers very different light at the substrate, which is why a manufacturer rating means little without the depth it was measured at.

Spectrum is the distribution of wavelengths. It changes how the aquarium looks, and for photosynthetic organisms it changes which wavelengths are usable. Marketing names for spectrum are not standardized between manufacturers, so treat the published spectral data for the specific product as the claim and the name on the box as decoration.

Duration, or photoperiod, is how long the light is on. It is the cheapest variable to change and the easiest to control precisely with a timer. There is no universal correct photoperiod: the right length depends on the intensity delivered, what is growing, and what you are observing in the aquarium. Change it deliberately, in one direction, and give the system enough time to respond before changing it again.

Light, oxygen, and the daily swing

In an aquarium with meaningful photosynthetic biomass, oxygen is produced only while the light is on, but every organism in the system — fish, plants, invertebrates, and the bacteria in the biofilter — consumes oxygen continuously. The consequence is a daily cycle: dissolved oxygen tends to be highest at the end of the lit period and lowest shortly before it begins again.

That matters when the system is heavily planted, when an algae bloom has added a large amount of photosynthetic biomass, or when temperature is high enough to reduce oxygen solubility while raising metabolic demand. If fish are gathering at the surface or breathing hard in the early morning and appear normal later in the day, the pattern itself is information. Increase surface agitation and gas exchange rather than assuming the fish are hungry or ill.

Light is one algae input, not the whole story

Algae needs light and dissolved nutrients. Reducing light reduces one input and can slow visible growth, but it does not remove the nutrients that accumulated from feeding and waste, and it can penalize the plants you are trying to keep. Treat photoperiod as one lever alongside feeding practice, waste export, water changes, and mechanical removal rather than as the single fix. The algae guide covers the nutrient side in detail.

Sunlight through a window is an uncontrolled input that varies by season, weather, and time of day. If an aquarium sits where direct sun reaches it, that light is part of the photoperiod whether you intended it or not, and it also adds heat. Both effects are easier to prevent by moving or shading the aquarium than to correct downstream.

Practical placement and safety

Follow the manufacturer instructions for mounting distance, ventilation, and moisture exposure for the specific fixture. Aquarium lighting sits above open water, so cords need drip loops, connections need to be above the water line, and a fixture that is not rated for the humidity it will sit in can fail early. Confirm the fixture and any controller are on circuits you can safely reach.

A timer or controller is worth more than an expensive fixture run by hand. Consistency is what most photosynthetic organisms and most fish respond to, and a schedule you actually keep is the only one that produces interpretable results. Record when you change a lighting setting so a later change in algae, plant condition, or fish behaviour has a cause you can look up.

Before buying a fixture

Aquarium depth and footprint, what is photosynthetic in the system, the published output and spectral data, mounting and ventilation requirements, and how the fixture will be controlled.

When changing photoperiod

Change duration in one direction only, note the date, and hold the new setting long enough to see plant, algae, and behaviour responses before changing anything else.

Signs light is part of a problem

Algae accelerating on lit surfaces, plants thinning despite adequate light, early-morning surface breathing, or a temperature rise that tracks the lighting schedule.

The boundary: lighting requirements are species-specific and product-specific. Confirm the needs of the plants, corals, or animals you keep against current primary sources, and follow the current manufacturer documentation for the exact fixture you install.
