Moving or upgrading: keep the biofilter, not the water

Most of what makes an established aquarium stable lives on surfaces, not in the water column. Understanding that changes what you carefully preserve during a move and what you can freely replace.

What actually carries the biofilter

Nitrifying bacteria colonize wet, oxygenated surfaces. In practice that means filter media, substrate, rock, and the interior surfaces of the system — not the water itself. Aquarium water contains comparatively little nitrifying capacity, which is why the widespread instinct to save as much old water as possible is misdirected effort.

The priority order follows from this. Keep filter media wet, oxygenated, and at a reasonable temperature throughout the move. Keep substrate and rock wet. Water is the least important thing to preserve, and hauling large volumes of it is heavy, awkward, and displaces effort from the things that matter.

That said, matching the chemistry of the destination water to what the animals are used to still matters. The goal is not to reuse the old water; it is to make sure the new water is close enough that the animals are not facing a chemistry change on top of the disruption of the move. Sequence the work

Plan the order before touching anything. A move generally runs: prepare and stage the destination, catch and hold the animals in matched water, keep media wet and aerated, drain, dismantle, transport, rebuild, refill with prepared water, restart equipment, then reintroduce animals.

Do not drain the aquarium with animals still in it and chase them around a few inches of water. Catching fish is stressful and injurious, and it is far worse in a nearly empty tank full of hardscape. Remove them into prepared holding containers early, with cover, at a stable temperature, with some aeration if the hold will be more than brief.

An aquarium must never be moved with water, substrate, or hardscape in it. The weight is dangerous, and the flexing can fail seams even in tanks that are visually intact afterwards. Empty it fully, and lift it supported from the base rather than by the rim or the frame.

Upgrading is a stocking event too

Moving into a larger aquarium feels like it should be strictly safer, and in the long run it usually is. In the short run it is a disturbance: the biofilter has been handled, some capacity has been lost, the volume has changed, and the layout the animals knew is gone.

Transfer as much of the mature surface as you reasonably can — the existing filter media above all, and as much substrate and rock as the new layout allows. Running the old filter alongside the new one on the larger system for a period is a common way to carry capacity across, if both fit the setup.

Then treat the result as a system that needs verification rather than one that is known good. Test ammonia and nitrite over the following days, feed conservatively, and postpone adding new animals until readings are stable. A larger tank is not a licence to add livestock on the same day; the biofilter has not grown just because the volume did.

Rebuilding and restarting

Rebuild the hardscape on a stable base, not on loose substrate that can shift. This is also the moment when territorial layouts get accidentally rewritten: if the new arrangement removes the visual breaks that were separating animals, expect aggression that did not exist before. Fill with prepared, conditioned, temperature-matched water. Expect cloudiness from disturbed substrate; a mechanical haze that clears is different from a bacterial bloom, and the cloudy water guide covers telling them apart. Restart circulation and aeration first, confirm heaters are fully submerged before energizing them, and check for leaks before the animals go back.

Reintroduce animals once temperature and chemistry match their holding water, using the same care described in the acclimation guide. Keep lighting low for the first period, feed lightly, and watch for aggression, respiration, and appetite. Write down the date of the move so that anything that appears in the following weeks can be related to it.

Longer moves

A move measured in hours or days is a different problem from a move across a room. Animals need transport containers with adequate water volume, insulation against temperature swings, darkness to reduce stress, and no feeding beforehand so that less waste is produced in transit. Media needs to stay wet and, ideally, aerated; sealed in a bag with no oxygen it deteriorates.

Be honest about the biofilter over a long move. Capacity that spends a day sealed and stagnant may not survive intact, and the system on the other end should be treated as partially cycled rather than established: test, stock conservatively, and be prepared to manage ammonia while it recovers.

Preserve, in order

Filter media wet and oxygenated, then substrate and rock kept wet, then chemistry matching. Old water itself is the lowest priority.

Never

Move a tank containing water, substrate, or hardscape; lift by the rim; chase fish in a nearly drained tank; energize an exposed heater; or restock on moving day.

After the move

Test ammonia and nitrite over the following days, feed conservatively, keep light low, watch for new aggression, check for leaks, and log the date.

The boundary: a move disturbs the biofilter by an amount you cannot predict in advance. Verify with measurements rather than assuming an established system stayed established, and seek qualified aquatic-veterinary help for animals that decline after a move.
